camp philosophy

CCS Philosophy

What makes Camp CenterStage (CCS) different is that all of our programs are based on nurturing leadership skills while using the arts as a form of expression and example. In addition, we have a high standard of a "judgement-free environment"; which results in everyone feeling very comfortable while trying new things. The camper who has had 6 years of tap classes gets the same applause, encouragement and guidance as the camper who is singing his/her first solo line in a song at a camp talent show. CCS has a staff of caring professionals who are passionate about being, modeling and developing life-long learners. We encourage campers to set goals (katiaki's) and figure out a path on how to reach and accomplish those goals (be it swimming to the dock, getting a role in the school play or getting their drivers license). In addition, we offer a huge variety of activities, from the traditional camping experiences to masterclass workshops taught by professionals in their field.

The ratio of boys to girls is about 1:3, fairly average for an arts-based camp. The boys campus and girls campus are separate. Cabins are grouped by age, and each cabin is home to 4 - 7 campers, a CIT (Counselor in Training) and at least one counselor. The days at CCS are filled with any or all of the following: swimming (at least twice a day), hiking, singing, movement or dance, waterfront games, acting and theater games, art projects, soccer, kickball, talent shows, game night, movie night - and the list goes on and on.

One of our traditional favorite days our Outreach Day, where the entire camp travels off campus by bus to Camp Sunshine and Casco Inn. Camp Sunshine is a family camp for children with cancer and Casco Inn is an assisted living home for the elderly. CCS campers share their skills by hosting a sing-a-long, performing repeat-after-me songs, playing theater games, and visiting with the residents. In addition, campers also help with a community clean up project on that same day.
